Don’t Take It Personal - How To Use Empathy To Be Happier

Intro

  • Human relationships are essential in our lives: personal and profesional
  • A bad interaction can ruin your day
  • Trust is hard to gain and easy to lose. However it is not practical to live in a low trust environment. In fact, it will become a source of negativity
  • How can we solve this?

Don’t take it personal

  • A expersion we heard so much that it lacks any meaning
  • What does it actually mean? Does it make sense?
  • To understand it, change the point of view. It suggest that we should look inside, however, we should look outside.
  • It is actually an empathy exercise
  • The biggest eye opener for me was to start understanding how complex is the lives of everybody
    • You think you have empathy until one of these moments hit you with like a true “wtf!” moment
  • When we acknowledge this our perspective can drastically change
    • On one hand: in most situations, we are just a little piece more in someones live. Their actions, responses, emotions are not your direct responsibility. A bad manner is most likely not directly specific to you, but part of a bigger and more complex day for that person.
    • On the other hand: this allow us to be more mindful and better people. Think of what others migh be going through at that moment. Be empathing and reajusting yourself for it. That will have an enourmous positive impact in the people you interact with
  • This is a work in progress for everybody. You might not be getting 100% right all the time. Doing the exersice with enhance our senses to do it better next time. And understanding how hard it is will make us more grateful for those that do this effort everyday
